I figured if someone was going to put a cache up there - why not me? If you've never been to "the lookout", it is well worth your time to visit. Leave your GPS off until you get there. This is an easy one for the kids while you enjoy the great vista. You'll have to do a little snooping around to find this one. See my profile for cache description and a BIG SPOILER.
Directions to the TOP!!
To get to Elk Butte Lookout, take Grandad Bridge road east out of Elk River. Stay on the main road and stay to the LEFT at the only fork you'll come to a few miles out of town. When you get to Captains Cabin,(no actual cabin here, but a map stand) take all left turns which will get you up and around the back side of Elk Butte. Work your way through the forest to the recently logged out area. At the logged area, simply follow the main jeep trail that goes 200-300 yards staying to the right along the tree line. Once thru this little logging operation, continue with your two remaining left turns to the top. SUV's can handedly make this run. When leaving, return the way you came (Do NOT turn to the left just below the summit or you'll be on the ride of your life!) Good Luck and enjoy this great run!!!!
