The local sheriff said, P. Whew Heffer, a suspected cattle rustler was mean as a snake and just as slippery. The gals at the Red Lantern Saloon shared a different opinion of the grizzled old coot because he'd always tip them with jewelry. Rumor had it that he had robbed a jewelry store and had it hidden under the floor boards of his cabin nestled against the hills. After a fire in the hills P. Whew was assumed dead because he was not ever seen in town again. Several folks went looking for Whew Heffer's jewels but never returned. I myself have seen the jewels but barely escaped with my life.
