Geocache Description:

This cache is an easy find, but it’s quite a ways off the beaten path. It is located in Saguache Park in the Gunnison NF near the La Garita Wilderness (between Saguache and Gunnison). It’s approximately 10mi from Hwy 114 depending on your route. The view of San Luis Peak and the park are incredible and worth the trip!

We have been visiting this area ever since I was a young cub – great fishing, hunting, hiking, ATVing, etc… If you are driving from the Saguache side, I would suggest getting off the pavement and traveling the Old Cochetopa Pass (Road NN14). This route has lots of historical significance – it’s on the old stage route between Saguache and San Juan, crossing the Continental Divide at the summit of the pass. In addition, it has a connection with one of the grizzliest events of Colorado history and the first incident of cannibalism. Alferd Packer (not a misspell on his first name) returned on this route to the Los Pinos Indian Agency, located very near Cochetopa Pass, in April 1874, reporting the loss of his party due to the weather. Further investigation revealed Packer had killed and eaten the five men he had persuaded to accompany him on a prospecting trip. The whole story has bizarre legal twists and other interesting facts – I recommend a read of Kenneth Jessen’s Ghost Towns: Colorado Style for more information about this event and more history of the area. You are looking for a plastic container filled with some survival goodies. It is found near a “preserved” building of significance. After the find let me suggest several things to check out in the area: Duck’s Foot Creek road (about 4mi East), which leads to an unbelievable view of the Saguache Creek, the Chimney Rock, which might be seen off to the SE from the cache site, Stone Cellar CG, and lots of neat structures left from old settlement/ranching days. (See Pictures) This place is an ATVer’s paradise! Hope you enjoy the cache – it should have been well worth the time.
