Geocache Description:

If you like Convict History then this is a good place to come and visit. The landowner is Aware of the cache and has no problems. Be careful (and gentle) crossing fence lines and watch out for snakes in the long grass.

We would like to thank the owner of the nearby land for permitting this cache to be near the Ruins but at a respectable distance so geocachers do not disturb the historic landmark. This cache is set at Lynton near the mouth of the Hutt River. It is 520km north of Perth and not far from Gregory which was the port through which lead and Copper were shipped that was locally mined. The first lead shipment was in 1853 and it was around this time that the government established the convict hiring depot at Lynton. The ruins of the of the stone buildings and the depot are still there to be seen as is the Commandants house which is located at the base of the hillside and is well worth the photo opportunity. We wandered around the area and the walls of the prison building are adorned with graffiti dating back many years, try to find if your birth year is represented, we found ours and no it wasn’t the year18 hundred and something. We placed the cache well away from the ruins so as not to disturb any of the history.
