Geocache Description:

Come explore Kernersville history!

Kernersville, with its small town atmosphere, is very rich in history. Located at the heart of the Piedmont Triad in North Carolina, it is easily accessible from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. The town was incorporated in 1741 with a total population of 147 people. Since then, Kernersville has experienced steady growth. In 2001, the population was estimated at over 19,000 people.

You'll need to visit three virtual stages and answer a few questions before reaching the fourth and final stage where a small ammo-can cache is hidden. Use the worksheet below when answering the questions to determine the coordinates for each stage. At each stage, please find parking nearby and walk to the coordinate site.

Stage 1 Coordinates:

Latitude: N 36º 07.022

Longitude: W 080º 04.609

Here you will find a sign. Use the information on the sign to answer these questions and determine the coordinates for Stage 2 below:

1A. The building for which this sign was erected no longer exists. What was the last year of existence for the building? _______
Use the third digit of the year in the first blank of latitude and the second digit of the year in the second blank of latitude.

1B. In which year was the building established by the Kerner Brothers? ______
Use the third digit of the year in the second blank of longitude.

Here you will find another sign. Use the information on the sign to answer these questions and determine the coordinates for Stage 3 below:

2A. In which number month did George Washington have breakfast at the tavern? ___
Use this answer in the first blank of latitude.

2B. On which day of the month did he have breakfast at the tavern? ___
Use this answer in the second blank of latitude.

Subtract 2 from this answer and use the result in the second blank of longitude.

Stage 3 Coordinates:

Latitude: N 36º 07 .___ ___ 5

Longitude: W 080º 0 ___ . ___ 91

Here you will find a sign and a building. Using the sign and looking at the building, answer the following questions and determine the coordinates for the Final Stage below:

3A. How many panes are in each window on the building? _____
Subtract 5 from this answer and use the result for the first blank of latitude.

3B. How many letters are in the name of the organization (four words) that maintains the building? _____
Subtract 5 from this answer and use the result in the second and third blanks of latitude.

3C. How many years are in the date span that is on the sign? ______
Use the last digit of the answer in the first blank of longitude.

Add the answers to the first two questions together (3A+3B - before you manipulate them) and add 10. Use this result in the second and third blanks of longitude.

Final Cache Coordinates:
