Geocache Description:

Lawrence Welk was born in a small German speaking hamlet in North Dakota in 1903. He knew at an early age that he didn’t want to be a farmer, his first love was music. At the age of 21 he learned to speak English and started out on a career in music. He was a talented accordion player and he became a shrewd businessman.He gained fame with his Lawrence Welk Show, which became a Saturday night mainstay for 17 years. The show was squeaky clean family entertainment, champagne bubbles, polkas and accordion music.In 1964 he started Lawrence Welk Resort as a small mobile home park with a 9-hole golf course. Today it has grown to become a 600 acre vacation head quarters with a hotel and vacation villas, two 18 hole golf courses, restaurants, a theater, shopping plaza and a conference center.In the shopping plaza there is an excellent life sized bronze statue sculpted by internationally known artist Brett Livingstone Strong in 1980. The statue has become a major photo op for the faithful who flock to the resort. Visit the statue to start your search. For many years this cache was a small magnetic but the hiding spot is gone now.The cache lives on because it was replaced in a much better location by resort staff.
