Geocache Description:

Easy terrain, minimal walking, beautiful location

Samuel Spencer was an important figure in Anson County andNorth Carolina in the Colonial, Revolutionary and early statehood periods. He was a clerk of the Anson Court when the famous Regulator Protest took place, which altered history and stirred the Royal Government from William Tryon in New Bern to the throne of GeorgeIII in London. As the tide of Revolution became evident, Spencer turned his sympathy to the colonies. He studied law at Nassau Hall, the forerunner of Princeton University before coming to Anson County. Governor Richard Caswell made him one of the first three superior court judges in North Carolina in 1777 with the organization of the Superior Court System. He attained the rank of colonel in military service, and practiced law in Wadesborough, old spelling. This well is on the exact location of the original well andthe stones were taken from the original curbing on the plan-tation that overlooked the Pee Dee river. The site was dedi-cated August 15, 1973 with the Honorable Hector Maclean, chairman of the North Carolina Bicentennial Comission as theguest speaker. This site had been deeded some time back to the Anson County Historical Society. Now on to the cache. Standing in front of the well, look atabout the 1 o'clock position (265 degrees).
