This cache is part of a series set by The Grockles
(a.k.a. Merman, Motley Crew, Omally & Pharisee).

The other caches in this series are:

Grockles Gumbo South : Ducks, Geese & Plus Fours
Grockles Gumbo East : D-Day in Droxford
Grockles Gumbo West : UFOs in Botley Wood?

And the final stage:

Grockles Gumbo: Here be Treasure!

Hexton is a small, sleepy, village tucked away in the North West corner of Hertfordshire. It's in one of the 'folds' that seem to typify the boundry between Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in this area. If you gave it a good shove to the East or to the West it would end up in Bedfordshire. Actually that's about all it has going for it. It has the obligatory old church with a village pond tucked away behind it and there's one pub, "The Raven", from which this cache takes it's name. I'd like to be able to say that it was a good place for a drink.... It was once but it doesn't seem to be any more. It has a reputation for excellent food and has become more of a restaurant than a pub. I didn't feel particularly welcome just leaning up against the bar for a casual pint.

The co-ordinates quoted are for a small car park adjacent to the village cricket field. You may have trouble parking there if a match is in progress but you should be OK at any other time. However... you may wish to check out the following locations before you park. It could save you a considerable walk.

Important: At one of the following locations you will need to find this information :-
ABCD was the year that Christmas died.

Location 1:      N51° 57.634'  W000° 23.476'      This multi-functional piece of Victorian ingenuity was erected in the year EFGH

Location 2:      N51° 57.822'  W000° 23.449'      You will find the answers to the following within a few yards of this point.

1) JKLMN is a 5 digit string of numbers who's sum is 17.
2) This expression of esteem and affection was erected in the year PQRS
3) The name of the Raven's home town is T letters long.

Location 3:      N51° 57.876'  W000° 23.511'      This is the small car park mentioned earlier. If you wish, you can sit in the convenient shelter to work out where you're going next. Please don't walk across the cricket pitch. Go back out onto the lane and walk the few yards to the start of the footpath (that's a hint!!)

You're heading for N51° SF.CG(D+E+ P)'   W000° AR.H(T- K)(N+M)'

Here you will find a small, brown, de-contamination kit container. Some folks have difficulty getting the lid off these boxes... Hold it in both hands with the 'lip' on the lid towards you. Put both thumbs against the underside of the lip and gently push up. The lid should come off easily.
The path you are on is well used so be a bit discrete whilst searching. Follow the instructions you find in the box and hopefully, you'll find the cache. Please make sure that the lid is back on properly and the box is well concealed before you leave as this a sometime playground for the local kids.

Please don't leave food stuff or sharp, pointy things in the cache.

If you enjoyed this cache, or even if you didn't, please consider logging on to GeocacheUK and giving it a rating.
