“INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic
cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. You can
map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip and at the
same time learn a little about our history.
INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#45
”Ten Little Beavers”
Welcome to the German Settlement Cemetery
in Lancaster Twp. in Huntington County. There are records for 30
burials here, ten of which are children of three Beaver Family
couples. Resting here are the mortal remains of one son and four
daughters of S & M Beaver, ranging in age from six months to
six years. Also, two sons and a daughter of John and MA Beaver,
aged three months to three years. In addition, a two year old son
of H & M Beaver. I don't know how these people could stand this
infant and child mortality of the 19th century. So it goes. There
are also some graves here marked only by native
rocks.
While picking up pebbles
off the surface of the bare ground at the base of a tree to build a
cairne, I found five little worked pieces of flint, flakes from
Native American tool-making activity. I wonder if some Miami Indian
family missed the mandatory bus west and is still lurking around
here (as spirits, maybe) making projectile points? Patrick says he
thought he heard tap-tap-tapping as we walked into the
Cemetery...
