Geocache Description:

Just Updated Description 3/22/2017

Geocachers have permission to enter.

Park on the road or just inside the entrance at N 45 25.137 W091 20.301.No bushwacking is needed! Be aware that local deer and turkey hunters also have permission to hunt this land. Surrounding property is clearly posted. The gravel road is NOT PLOWED in the winter and is part of a county snowmobile trail. Be aware, the difficulty rating may be much higher in winter!

History lesson: Try imagining what it may have been like here 100 years ago. Here was once a self supporting 40 acre farm, the land now only a small part of a much larger operation. Traces of the original settlers' house and barn can still be found.

Geology lesson: See the hills to the northwest? The Blue Hills are the 1.6 billion year old remnants of ancient mountains and are the largest mass of quartzite bedrock in the state. Check out the Blue Hills Cache near The Devils' Kettle at N 45° 29.391 W 091° 30.193, it's one of our favorite finds. The Blue Hills are also the site of a rare geologic feature called the Felsenmeer, which is now a State Natural Area.

Biology lesson: Near the cache, look for goldenrod plants with large round galls on the upper stems. Inside the galls are the small white grub of the Goldenrod Gall Fly. These grubs are a popular bait for ice fishing.
