Geocache Description:

Arran - Scotland in miniature.

There’s lots of speculation about the possible importance that the King’s Caves played in history (I thought about calling it ‘The Other Rab’s Wee Hideaway’!). I choose to see them for what they are though, an amazing geological feature. Now, either the land’s risen or the sea level has dropped cos I can’t see how they’ve been formed otherwise.

The wall carvings are fascinating, pity they’ve been ruined by some thoughtless yobs. If you want better resolution copies of the pictures let me know.

The Forest Authority’s Kings Caves car park is on the A841 between Blackwaterfoot and Mochrie. I didn’t see a sign going North but there is definitely one going South as we noticed after we turned round and headed back to it! The information board is worth a read. It gives some history and useful warnings about the route to the caves. Now that North Ayrshire Council have put in a new path that heads more or less west from the car park the walk is more popular than ever.

The walk is now less than 2 klicks and takes less than 45 minutes. If you take the old route you get a view of the back of the North Arran mountains that most people don’t normally get (they don’t look so scary from this side!) and the views to the West as you walk along the cliff top are great. After descending to the coast down quite a steep and bumpy path you come to the caves. It’s quite a big colourful box. Look down as you walk along, there is an interesting range of pebbles to be found, I brought some home for my kids who feigned interest for at least 15 seconds.

If you would prefer a coastal walk, according to the OS map there’s a path that skirts around the golf course at Blackwaterfoot and follows the coast past the remains of a fort. This route is only slightly longer than the one we chose.

I’m indebted to Jango & Bobba-Fett who rescued, dried out and re-hid this cache for me – many thanks.
