City Market (Formerly GFWAY 1) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

nittany dave: I don't find myself in this part of town enough and don't feel like taking the time just for this. Should have done it last weekend when I was nearby for the food truck rodeo. Oh well. Almost a 13 year run.

Geocache Description:

City Market (Formerly GFWAY 1)

There was a fire in this building 2 days after I placed the cache. The building survived, but the business inside decided to close and move elsewhere. I've renamed the cache but left tribute to the original purpose for the cache. .

This is an area with lots of things to see and do. Many special events throughout the year are held in this part of town. A family friendly area with plenty of nearby museums, restaurants, night spots, art galleries and other shops.
Check out First Friday (the 1st Friday of every month) when art galleries are open 6-9pm. Thursday through Saturday nights, a free trolley links you with other downtown hot spots.

From October 1, 1914 until the mid 1940's the City Market flourished. Farmers from the Eastern part of the state came regularly in their trucks and horse drawn carts bringing produce, poultry, seafood and flowers. Home baked goods were also a favorite among Raleigh city wives. On Saturdays you would find farmers gathered at the Market and in Moore Square (known as the "the Grove") visiting and picnicking with their family and friends.

With the advent of supermarkets and the opening of a new Farmers Market off Capital Boulevard in 1957, the old City Market no longer satisfied the need of Raleigh households so in June of 1957 the City Council adopted a resolution to close it. In 1959 the building was sold to an individual who leased it to a furniture store.

In 1980, the City Council secured a grant from the North Carolina Division of Archives & History to study the architectural resources surrounding Moore Square. As a result, the City Market was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The City then began work to rehabilitate the Market and nearby buildings.

Because of the frequent activity in this place, the cache will be difficult at times to find without being observed. Buildings can make accurate signals a challenge. Those two items are what primarily contribute to the 2.5 difficulty rating.
Please do your best to avoid being seen.

DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING APART SEARCHING FOR THIS CACHE.  IT IS NOT NECESSARY!
