Geocache Description:

Located at the true summit of Aiea Ridge, high on the Ko`olau Summit. The trail was cleared again on April 9th, 2004. Now is your time to go get it.

Two hundred and thirty four years ago today, August 22, 2004, Captain Cook Claimed Australia for Great Britain. This cache honors that event like it or not. This cache is at the end of the Aiea Ridge Trail. Do Not confuse the Aiea Ridge Trail and the Aiea Loop Trail. The ridge trail begins at about the ½ way point on the loop trail.Stuart Ball describes this hike on page 96 of his revised edition book “the Hikers Guide to O`ahu”. He says it’s an 11 mile round trip and rated Low for danger, suitable for Novice, intermediate, and expert hikers. The trail has just been cleared by members of the Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club so NOW is the time to find the cache. Nature will make it more difficult as time goes by, the rains fall and the Uluhe grows back over the trail.Begin the hike at the upper parking lot of the Keaiwa Heiau State Park at the top of Aiea Heights Drive. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR. There have been a number of break-ins in the area. After about 35 minutes on the loop trail where it makes a sharp turn to the right there is a trail that begins to the left. Coordinates are N21 24.310 W157 52.930. This is the beginning of the Aiea Ridge Trail. After about 2 hours of total walking there is a little clearing just before a drop in the trail. This is peak 1925’ marked on the USGS map. In another hour you should be in a big clearing w/lots of grass. This is called the Heliport and is marked on your map as Pu`u Kawipoo. Elevation is 2441 feet. You only have 1 ½ hours to go to get to the cache. The cache is located at the TRUE summit of the ridge. Nature will play tricks on you at the “false” summit. You will think you are at the true summit but you are not. Turn right go down a bit, the under and around the left side of the power poles. You are almost there, just another 20 minutes or so. The boom you are there!!!!!!!!!! Elevation 2805’, a small grasses open spot w/great views of both the windward side of the Ko`olau Mts and on the other side there is Pearl Harbor and off in the distance the Wai`anae Mountains. Check the picture I up loaded. The cache is in the bush on the left side.Happy Hiking.Check the uploaded photo for help.1-Log book and pencil2-Tasmanian Devil Stickers3-Magnifying Glass4-Emergency Poncho5-Compact Can Opener6-A Jeep Travel Bug, placed there by my lovely partner today Ms. Unimongger.
