The Ney Environmental Learning Center is a day use learning center designed to serve people of all ages. Programming for the general public as well as K-12 school classes revolves around seasonal activities. The Ney ELC is located on the bluffs of the Minnesota River Valley just east of Henderson, Minnesota. One can find woodlands, prairie remnants, river bottoms, crop land, the famous Ney frog pond, scenic streams and ravines and abundant wildlife. The site gained widespread attention in 1995 when a local teacher and her students discovered deformed frogs in the pond on the property. The property now serves as the site for research of the deformed frog issue, an international concern.
The interpretive center was built in 1997 with funds from the Minnesota Legislature and furnished with a generous grant from the Schmidt Foundation. The building may be rented for meetings or events. Parking facilities include handicap accessible spaces. Additional farm buildings on the site are used for appropriate classes such as bird house and snowshoe construction. A frog pond loop trail is open to the public, and includes an interpretive brochure for self guided hikes. Future trails will include a mile long trail through a scenic ravine and a trail following the historic Red River Ox Cart Trail which leads to the Minnesota River at East Henderson. This trail will provide access to the Minnesota River at an adjoining county park.
