NOTE FOR SUMMER: Nettles abound, we recommend trousers and
closed shoes!
You can park at N 52 08.361 W 000 22.580 but this is only meant
to be for the café/restaurant nearby, so if you are not
planning on stopping for a drink or an ice-cream afterwards I would
advise you to park along the road outside. You’ll have to do
this if you come after closing as well. It is about a half mile
walk from the car park.
If you fancy a longer walk and to see some historical buildings,
you might like to park here: N 52 08.201 W 000 23.067. Here you can
see Willington’s dovecotes and old stables. The dovecote is
lined internally with nesting boxes for over 1500 pigeons. The
buildings are the remains of a historic manorial complex, and
include stones believed to have been taken from Newnham Priory
during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Henry VIII is supposed
to have visited this area.
The interiors of the buildings are closed most of the time, but
are often open bank holiday weekends, or appointments can be made
at other weekends –
follow this link for information. From this spot, it will be
just over a mile to the cache, but most of the way is very flat and
easy, only the last section warrants the level 2 terrain
rating.
The cache is a green ammo box.
Buggies will manage most of the distance but the last stretch
may be difficult, though you will probably manage with bikes.
Caution advised if you want to try this at night or have young
children as you will be walking right along the river.
We had some trouble with tree cover on the approach to the
cache. If you have similar trouble, go to the following co-ords
then go about 100ft in a north-westerly direction to get near the
cache site: N 52 08.474 W 000 21.976
