Geocache Description:

A walk in the Northwich Community Woodlands along easy routes to a cache hidden close to the path.

This is one of three caches placed for the 'Step into Cheshire' event with the intention of encouraging people to explore the Cheshire countryside (see web page listed at top of page).

Dairy House Meadow owes much of its landscape to its industrial past. Originally designed to store lime waste, a by-product of the soda-ash industry, a system of perimeter bund walls were built to surround the site. Despite the re-profiling of the bunds during the recent regeneration project, (completed in 2000), these bunds remain a dominant feature in the landscape.

The site was never actually used by ICI to store lime waste and consequently was given over to farming, although little evidence exists of site of Dairy House Farm. The land was bought by Cheshire County Council in the 1990s and the land reworked to make it suitable for public recreation.

The site comprises of four main habitat types; grassland, woodland and scrub, areas of new tree plantation and several water bodies. It is a Site of Biological Importance for its dragonflies and damselflies along with its Great crested newt population.

To the North of the site is Marbury Country Park’s area of semi-natural ancient woodland, Big Wood and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The natural boundary to the east is marked by Forge Brook with the main activities of neighbouring land being farming. To the south are Ashton’s and Neumann’s Flashes, an area of calcareous grassland, scrub and water bodies and to the west is Anderton Nature Park which includes the site of British Waterways' Anderton Boat Lift and Visitor Centre.

The cache is a clip-lock box and originally contained a variety of goodies from Cheshire attractions including Tatton Park and the Salt Museum.

There is car parking at Witton Mill Meadow close to Northwich town centre, and also at Anderton Nature Park and Marbury Country Park.
