From this location it is possible to see two white horses (Devizes and Pewsey), the Lansdown monument at Cherhill (Oldbury Castle) and Westbury (the cement works)! Beyond those places there is another range of hills - possibly South Wales. The views are, simply, fantastic.
This location is the Urchfont picnic area (cache placed by kind permission of Wiltshire County Council). The picnic area is just north of the Salisbury Plain and now that the benches are gone, the picnic area is simply the woods. There is also a large grass area adjacent.
You can either park in Urchfont and walk up the bridlepath or cache and dash by driving along the Ridgeway via N51°17.855', W01°54.962' to park at the picnic area adjacent to the cache itself. Note that this is a track passable by road cars with care (watch out for the huge potholes)!
If driving here then you will climb a hill to be faced by an Army checkpoint. Turn right on the Ridgeway and you will be on a public right of way. The Army training area is clearly marked along the Ridgeway - do not enter!
An Ordnance Survey map for this location is available at this web site.
