Geocache Description:

The first time I walked in here, my reaction was, “Wow!” There was an enormous stump that had been scarred by fire. It made me wonder whether the tree died before or after the fire, and how many years ago the fire had raged. I wanted to share this spot with others and felt that a Letterbox Hybrid might be the way to do it.

1. Directions to parking:

Cachers – park at the coordinates given above. You will need to display a Discover Pass while parked here.

Letterbox folk – take Delphi to McLane Creek Centennial Demonstration Forest and Nature Trail. Enter and park in the first small parking area.

2. Directions to find the cache and letter box supplies:

Once you have parked, stand facing across the roadway from parking.

Cross the roadway and go a bit to your left where you will see the trail entrance.

Follow the footpath. When you come to small side trails, do not turn; continue on the main trail. Walk gently past the salal, ferns, berries, and other foliage. Savour your walk through the trees.

Go gently up and then down to an area where the ground levels out. There will be a large stump on your left as you descend. Go past it to an enormous stump that is located like a centerpiece. It could make you also say, “Wow!”

Continue on the main trail to the point where it splits into two trails. Take either one and note the three drainage pipes under one of the trails just before the two trails reconnect.

You will see large stumps on both sides of the trail right after it reconnects. Go just past the one on your right and stop.

Look to your right and you will see a very large stump pretty much straight in front of you.

Carefully find your way to this large stump on the cushiony forest floor without stepping on the plants. Can you walk as silently as the Native Americans did years ago?

On your right you will pass a small broken stump, charred from fire.

As you approach the large stump, you will see a cavity in the base - that's not where the cache is to be found.

Circle clockwise around this large stump to find another cavity where the cache is hidden behind thick pieces of bark.

After logging your visit and making any desired trades, replace the cache and make it look as natural as possible so that it is not discovered by the casual visitor to the area..

I hope you enjoyed this little trip into the forest. On your way back to your vehicle, stay on the main trail to make your journey easy.
