This is a two-part multi cache set in the Devil’s spittleful nature reserve.
The reserve is thought to get its name originally from the central sandstone outcrop, topped with scots pine and originally know as the "Devil’s Spadeful".
It is one of the few areas of heathland remaining in Worcestershire and is about 2,500 years old. The heathland, grassland, woodland and areas of bushes and small trees (scrub) make up an important conservation area.
There is an interesting range of plants and animals especially butterflies and unusual species of bees and wasps that burrow in the bare, sandy soil. Typical birds include green woodpecker, tree pipit, wood warbler, whitethroat and sparrowhawk.
The trust is managing the reserve to conserve the heath by removing invading scrub and grazing with hardy breeds of cattle such as belted Galloway.
The legend behind The Devil’s Spadeful (spittleful) as told by Sarah Krivosic: -
One day in the distant past the Devil was looking to cause someone some mischief. ‘Aha!!’ he thought ‘I will drop a large spade full of soil into the river; this will cause the river to burst its banks, drowning all the mealy peasants that live in Bewdley. Serves them right!’
After a while the Devil met a giant and said ‘Hey ugly! How far is Bewdley from here?’ ‘Well’ said the smirking giant, ‘Bewdley is a long, long way from here. It will take you days to get there!’
By this point the Devil had become bored of the load he was carrying and promptly threw the soil to the ground, and walked away thinking of easier mischief to create.
