The
legend of Black Dog Woods:
A young
lady of the parish was being pursued by two suitors. The two men
decided to fight a duel to determine which one of them should marry
her. In the ensuing duel, one of them was shot dead. This man had
been the owner of a black dog which, seeing the demise of its
master, attacked the other man, killing him. Totally distressed at
losing both her suitors, the young lady then took her own life and
was buried at Dead Maids crossroads, which is located on the edge
of the old parish.
Since then, the black dog has haunted the local woods, which
appropriately are called Black Dog
Woods... |
THE
ROUTE:
The following is a description of the route the geocacher is
suggested to take. This cache can be cache-n-dashed but the
geocacher will have to plan that himself if he desires not to take
a nice woodland walk.
Ample parking
is in the lay-by on the A36 at 51°14.560'N, 2°14.986'W.
You can either follow my directions below or if you are feeling
brave, cut your own way through the wood to the final cache
location.
Suggested
Directions from the lay-by:
Make your way the very short distance along the busy road using the
grass verge to the gated entrance into the haunted Black Dog Woods
(51°14.449'N, 2°14.816'W)
Do not stray too far from the stone track for fear of what might
be lurking in the shadows. The stone track peters out to an
inclined muddy path, stick to this as soon meets a footpath which
is located at 51°13.989'N, 2°15.642'W .Here you will leave
the muddy track and travel left following a woodland footpath in
the direction of at stile located at (51°13.964'N,
2°15.645'W) You will not be crossing this stile at all, but
take a rest here before making your way to the physical cache
located at....
ACTUAL CACHE LOCATION : 51°13.963'N,
2°15.257'W
Your looking
for a 3litre ammunition box. The co-ords accuracy could be
restricted by tree cover, the difficulty reflects this. Please
replace and hide the cache well, obscuring from plain view as there
is a path nearby. I know its basic but some cachers seem not to do
this......try recovering with the lose bark and throwing a handfuls
of leaf matter over to help things blend in.
Thank you and
Happy Caching..
