Geocache Description:

Turn right off highway #3 onto Rosicky road…just past the Wardner bridge heading east. Follow the GPS.

Wardner was to be the new “Omaha” of the East Kootenay. Central to everything. It was a stopping off point for the riverboats from Helena, Montana and many entrepreneurs from Spokane, Washington. In 1896 the first sawmill called the Crowsnest Pass Lumber Co. (CNPL) was built and produced 200,000 BD FT of lumber in a 24 hr period. The mill employed hundreds and provided material for the new metropolis of Wardner, the rail road as well as shipping lumber south. However, re-routing the railroad changed everything, almost overnight. The new route to Cranbrook as opposed to going to Ft. Steele saw the action shift to Cranbrook and the mill was idled in 1898. An American and a Canadian thought that despite the problems of the Wardner mill “there was money waiting to be made from the seemingly endless stands of enormous trees that blanket the area”. Wardner appeared ideal for a lumber mill as there was thick timber on hillsides and river bottoms as well railroad and river transportation were at hand. A bigger plant was built in 1904 and the mill was back in business. A devastating forest fire in 1931 wiped out many tracts of timber and the mill closed forever. The planer mill was reactivated during World War II and in 1956 they sold out to Crestbrook Forest Industries. CNPL was dissolved in 1957.
