Park the Princess of Wales public house in Lea Bridge Road, (formerly the
Prince of Wales changed its name in homage to Diana POW). A
good pint can be had here
Walk towards the south (down stream) continue south cross by the weir where
the Lee Navigation and River Lea again split and flow their separate ways around
Hackney Marshes.

The old river goes east around the marshes, while the straighter navigation
carries on down the west side. (they meet again where the
London 2012 Olympic Bid stadium would
be) –
Follow the Lea Valley Walk that follows the towpath of the navigation, almost
immediately crossing a bridge to the opposite bank. This is an area called The
Middlesex Filter Beds Nature Reserve.
These filter beds were constructed to filter the water being piped to east
London houses in the 1850's (after an outbreak of Cholera), it was apparently
used until the 1970s. On the opposite bank is the unused Hackney Power Station
that was feed with coal by the barge load. You can see (and hear) the power
cable going over the water. Sorry this may mess with your GPS.
Keep walking with the river on your right and the water works on your left –
take the first left following the wall of the water works – follow this path
until you get to the number 2 the take the right fork – you are very close now –
walk into the trees.
If you can find the large concrete platform in the trees you are within
spitting distance. The coverage in the summer is quite heavy so you may have to
move about to get a GPS fix - you should be fine at the Cache however.
