Geocache Description:

Two caches comprise the multi-cache and are located near sea level in a park along the Oslo Fjord.

The Glossary of Geology is a treasure trove of fun technical words. “Chill Zone” is one of my favourites. This cache is intended to introduce the casual cacher to a surprisingly nice “chill zone”.

The cache area is located in the new park at Hydro Strand. This park is a great area to “chill” from the urban stresses with maybe a thermos of coffee on a sunny evening. In addition, its quite a nice place to swim and “chill off” on a warm day.

But back to geology…in this area you can see limestones that were formed in a warm shallow sea during the Cambriam and Silurian periods (550 to 420 million years ago). (You can see broken sea shells in the rocks indicating that storms and waves threw the shells around so that’s a good indication it was shallow…and we know that limestone form in warm water.) Later in the Permian (ca. 260 million years ago) when large volcanoes developed along the Oslo rift magma (lava) squirted into large cracks that were open. One large crack system goes from Huk on Bygdøy straight through this area, over Ullernåsen and up to Sørkedalen. Since the limestones were relatively cold, and the “syenite” lava was molten hot, the edges of the lava cooled quickly along the “chill zone” and didn’t allow any large crystals to grow in the lava. Deeper into the “magma crack” the magma was insulated and crystals had longer time to grow. If you have time to explore you can see a good chill zone on the beach below the final cache.

The first cache is a small micro cache that only includes the coordinates to the main cache. Please make sure that this is replaced exactly where you found it. Both caches are located near paths and only a “few” meters over sea level. The area is best reached by public transport or bicycling due to parking difficulties (especially during weekday work hours). Please do not cross the Løvenskiold-Vækerø AS property, as it would be unnecessary and possibly hazardous.

The main cache is 9 x 9 cm black camouflaged contained with screw cap. The original contents are:
- Log book with pencil & sharpener
- Parachute man
- Fancy bottle top
- Correction tap
- Post it pads
- An unused 6 kr stamp

God tur!
