Fear Factor Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Walden Pond: [:(] After five years, the inevitable has happened. The cache has been taken. I've had to do a lot of maintenance on the stages over the years (for those of you who have found this cache, who vandalizes THESE stages?!), and Belle Island has changed A LOT. What started as a bushwhack to the Audition area is now a leisurely stroll along a path. Even the swing is gone. When the first ammo can site had a path nearby, I moved it to the "middle of nowhere". Over the last year or two, even the middle of nowhere has maintained bike trails. The ammo can was within a few feet of a trail, on both sides! No way to be discreet when searching for it.

This was my favorite cache to create, and I loved reading the logs, especially the private entries in the Fear Factor Yahoo group. I'll post a few of my favorite entries and photos soon, so those of you who never had a chance to search for this can live vicariously through others.

I'm sad to see it go. It's the end of an era for me...[xx(]

Geocache Description:

2005 Cache of the Year Award

"Being frightened is an experience you can't buy."
Anthony Price - Sion Crossing

There are five stages to this cache. Each Challenge is successively more difficult. The final cache is the usual ammo can, and is not a challenge. It is meant as a reward for those brave and hardy souls who are able to complete all three challenges. Don't worry...you won't have to eat anything gross...at least not intentionally

The First stage is an Audition. Face your fears and grab the tiger by the tail. If you can pass this test, you will have the coordinates to the First Challenge. If after experiencing the Audition you are not willing to continue, then relax and enjoy the nearby swing. It's more your speed...

TheFirst Challenge involves bouldering, water, and the unknown.

The Second Challenge involves cunning, wit, physical activity and claustrophobia. It is intentionally difficult, in order to weed out those individuals for whom the Third challenge may be too dangerous.

The Third Challenge involves acrophobia. If you are able to complete all three Challenges, then obviously, fear is not a factor for you! Your prize awaits you at the Final Cache.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
Frank Herbert - Dune

WARNING: This hunt will involve 1 1/2 miles of moderate hiking and climbing, and will take a minimum of 1 1/2 hours to complete. It is physically challenging, and should not be attempted by those with serious medical conditions, children, elderly, or those impaired by medications or other substances.

If you are afraid of: heights, water, climbing/jumping, enclosed spaces, the unknown, darkness, wild animals, bushwhacking, or injury, then you should seriously reconsider your attempt to find this cache. However, if you are comfortable with uncertainty, love a challenge and don’t mind a bit of physical activity, then this one's for you!

NOTE: DO NOT attempt this hunt during or shortly after periods of rain or any type of wet weather.

Suggested items:

Hiking boots and a change of clothes

Hiking Stick

Notepad and pen

Water and snacks

Climbing harness with a short length of safety rope and at least one carabineer. (if you are in good shape {or an experienced climber} and not afraid of heights, you may not need this item.)

A small plastic bag to CITO. Since this is a popular muggle area, you can use the bag as an explaination as to what you are doing. Tell them you are with the Clean City Committee.

Additional Hints (Decrypt)

[Audition Hint is encrypted as usual. In order to make the other hints not readily apparent, each successive hint has an unnecessary letter between each necessary letter. The unnecessary letter needs to be removed after the usual decryption. For example, the 1st Challenge hint has one unnecessary letter between each necessary letter, the 2nd Challenge hint has two unnecessary letters between each letter, etc. The Final Hint is encrypted regularly, but is backwards] [Audition]haqre zbygra, va gur ubyr [1st Challenge]vdad gnuqr mjfnkgkrme, otdeknho gnu ezbjpcx mbde yyjnteotgr zocbnhjyeqarge [2nd Challenge]ghhuhhehhh grruddr umebzqyncr, bmga ggnuunr yzanopqmkqkmrdde, [3rd Challenge]tnopbqrs onoprqrsgtuvjwxyrzabrcdea gnopuqrsr fnopgnophnopznopcnopf, ydjrbeglbhvbx hmkpaioaqzyxrwute onfqbstuhwxyyeglqcmkrpioe [Final Cache]FCH qan fravi rug erqah
