Signal Hill is NorthEast Lebanon's largest conserved public parcel, and dominates local views. Trail climbs ridge to summit meadow through open fields and successional mixed woods. Highlights include mountain views, field and forest wildflowers, abundant wildlife, old pastures, stone walls, and orchards. With summits locally known as Bald Hill, Allen Hill, and Fay Hill, Signal Hill was key colonial outlook. Post was chained to granite ledge, in line with similar semaphores (signal flags, fires, etc) from inland forts to sea. Directions from I-89, exit 17. Take right at end of exit ramp onto Rt. 4, first left onto Riverside. This will get you to a covered bridge (Packard Hill Covered Bridge). Take a right on HardyHill Rd 1.1 miles N to Steven Rd. Turn left, go 1.1 miles to small opening in low stonewall on the left, driveway just west of second intersection of Alden Rd and Stevens Rd. Please do not block access. (N 43 39.857 , W072 13.276). You can park right here (but don't block access) or drive down a bit farther and park on the small parking spots of the road.
Entering the conservation area, you will see a big field (lower hayfield), follow the left side of it up to the ridge. It will lead you into the upper hayfield, where the trail will enter the woods.
Cache is a small ammobox with a bunch of trinkets, like a bookcrossing book (Prince of Chaos (Chronicles of Amber)by R. Zelazny ), flashlight, marbles, ostrich, music pin. It also contains my 5yo's first travel bug Penguin, who would love to see lots of places.
