“INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic
cemeteries built by Hoosier (What's a hoosier?) Pioneers in central
Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip
and at the same time learn a little about our past.
INDIAN
SPIRIT QUEST #51
”Chief Little Turtle's Granddaughter"
This quest will take you to a pair of
side-by-side cemeteries in Roanoke, Indiana, St. Joseph's Catholic
and Glenwood. You need to find the American Flag and POW/MIA flag
poles. In the center of them you will find the cut stump memorial
to KIL-SO-QUAH,(Sun Woman) 1810-1915,(lived 105 years!) "MARGARET
REVARRE", who was the granddaughter of ME-SHE-KIN-O-QUAH, a famous
Miami Indian War Chief, known to the white settlers as "Little
Turtle". At the base of the POW flag pole is a metal marker for
Spanish American War vets, I don't know why....
Also , don't miss the Big Crucifix.

Michikinikwa
(Little Turtle) was born in 1752 near Fort Wayne in Little Turtle
Village on the Eel River. He was the son of the Miami Chief
Acquenacke and a Mahican mother.
As a young warrior,
Michikinikwa participated in the 1780 defeat of a French detachment
in defense of his village. He later led a small confederation of
Native American tribes in defeating federal army forces led by Gen.
Josiah Harmar on the Miami River (1790) and by Gen. Arthur St.
Clair at St. Mary's (1791).
Michikinikwa is
credited with calling Anthony Wayne the "chief who never sleeps."
He urged his people to seek peace prior to the 1794 Battle of
Fallen Timbers, in which Wayne's forces defeated the confederated
tribes led by Blue Jacket of the Shawnee. Michikinikwa was present,
but not in command, at Fallen Timbers.
In 1795, Michikinikwa
and others signed the Treaty of Greenville. He kept most of his
Miami tribe neutral when Tecumseh of the Shawnee later urged
Midwestern tribes to fight against white encroachment. He urged his
people to abstain from alcohol, to farm the land and to get
vaccinated against smallpox.
Michikinikwa met with
George Washington in Philadelphia in 1797 and had his portrait
painted by Gilbert Stuart.
Michikinikwa died in
Fort Wayne July 14, 1812.
Meet the ghost of
Samuel Zent, who enlisted as a Private at the start of the Civil
War, and received a battlefield promotion to officer. Wounded
several times, he eventually rose to the brevet rank of Colonel to
command his 13th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After the war
he made several trips out west, to participate in the Black Hills
Gold rush and the Oklahoma Land Rush, but always returned home to
Roanoke.
The cache container
is a small plastic peanut butter jar painted black. Cache
container replaced, now a spice jar. Please replace it just as
you found it, so the squirrels, ferrets, skunks, gators and
coons can't get to it. BYOP. Park with care. If you find a
fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground,
preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, please be
respectful, and cache in, trash out.
