These coordinates take you to the location of another of the many points of historical interest commemorating Palo Alto’s past. Prior to being annexed to Palo Alto, the town of Mayfield occupied the California Avenue area. This site commemorates the erection of an institution which fostered one of the foundation attributes of Palo Alto, namely education.
This area used to be the old town of Mayfield which started when James Otterson opened a wayside inn near the intersection of California Avenue and El Camino Real in 1853. Also in that year, Elisha Crosby bought 250 acres and named it Mayfield Farm. The real spur to growth occurred when the railroad station was relocated from Churchill Avenue to the current location on California Avenue in 1863. During this period, the Palo Alto area consisted of open fields. In the 1890s Leland Stanford approached the town to provide housing and various retail services for the students and faculty of his new university. There was one condition however, the saloons must close so that the town would have the appropriate sedate atmosphere. The town laughed and rejected his proposal, so it became the “watering hole” for Stanford students. Leland Stanford then hired Timothy Hopkins to purchase property and lay out his own town which he called Palo Alto after the name of his own farm. Prohibition and general mismanagement caused the town to fall on hard financial times. As a result, moves started to join Palo Alto. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts, Mayfield was annexed by Palo Alto in July, 1925. Little evidence
remains of its colorful existence.
