Geocache Description:

Stop #3 on the (now mostly defunct) Monroe County Cemetery Tour.

This is one of Monroe County's forgotten treasures. The Old Aberdeen Cemetery is labeled an "Historically Significant Abandoned Cemetery" and is located not far off the main road. Many of the stones of people buried here have been sited in books and magazines. There is a Confederate dead section where over 5000 civil war soldiers are buried, mostly in burial trenches. There is even an above ground grave of Alice Whitfield, an old lady buried sitting in her rocking chair with knitting needles in hand. The cemetery is supposedly haunted, and there have been several accounts of people seeing a ghostly girl carrying a lantern through the cemetery at night.
