Gisborough Priory (Redcar & Cleveland) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Graculus: This cache has been unavailable for a considerable period and as the owner has not responded to logs nor given any indication it is being replaced/repaired in the near future I am archiving it.

Rather than keep it temporarily disabled (which should only be used for shortish periods) I'm archiving it.

If/when the cache is ever replaced I'll gladly un-archive it assuming it still meets the guidelines.

Guidelines: "As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time - normally a few weeks - in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive or transfer the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,

Graculus

Geocache Description:

*** CACHE RELOCATED 16 FEB 2005 ***

First a spelling lesson! It is Gisborough Priory, Gisborough Hall and Lord Gisborough but the town is Guisborough. Both spellings are pronounced the same.

The priory was built in 1119 AD by Robert de Brus II, Lord of Skelton, Guisborough and Danby. One of his descendants was Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale, who became famous as Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland.

The priory was home to Augustinian monks. It caught fire in 1289 AD and extensive rebuilding lasted into the 14th century. Like all monasteries, Henry VIII ordered it to be pulled down in the 1530s.

If you want to avoid vast crowds, market days are Thursday and Saturday. Free disc parking is available on the high street which is called Westgate, on the west side of the market cross. There is a large car park on Rectory Lane at NZ 61474 15847 (N 54 ° 32.051 W 1 ° 3.089). There is also a small car park at Church Square where the public footpath leaves the road on the north side of St. Nicholas’s Church at NZ 61628 16131 (N 54 ° 32.203 W 1 ° 2.942). The charge is 60p for one hour and both are free after 18:00 hrs and on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The public footpath mentioned above leads to the cache. When you are in the field, there is a good silhouette of the remains of the priory and dovecote. Kingfishers live in this area.
