The Rust
Sanctuary is a 62-acre preserve donated to the Audubon
Naturalist Society by the estate of Margaret Dole Rust. It was
opened in October 2000. Located just west of Leesburg, the
sanctuary includes an upland forest, meadows, and pond, as well as
a manor house used for classes, offices, and a nature center.
The Rust
Sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk, with Naturalists on duty
at the manor weekdays from 9-5. Please feel free to stop by the
manor house to visit with the Naturalists who care for the
Sanctuary – you won’t be sorry… these
knowledgeable folks look forward to sharing the unique habitats and
history of this remarkable preserve with the Geocaching community.
Please remember to practice CITO whenever possible, and adhere to
the ‘leave no trace’ policy.
The cache itself is set in 4 stages, with containers ranging
from micro to standard size. Minimal bushwhacking is required, and
the Rust staff encourages the use of established trails and game
paths while seeking the caches to minimize habitat impact. As in
any wild area, dress appropriately and use insect repellant during
bug season.
I would like to thank the NoVa Geocaching community for
providing me and my family with so many hours of wide-ranging
adventure. I have enjoyed your hides, your logbook entries, and
your company on rare occasion. I hope that you enjoy the pursuit of
this cache every bit as much as I have enjoyed placing it for you.
A very special thank you goes out to the staff at the Rust
Sanctuary - thank you for being so receptive of this new sport!
