Welcome to the 3rd Scottish Geocachers’ Day Out event at Glen Doll on Sunday November 7th 2004.
The coordinates are for the Glen Clova Hotel, which was originally a Drover’s Inn dating back to the 1850s. It offers good meals and hotel or bunkhouse accommodation should you wish to stay the night before the event. The event part will start from around 3 to 4pm, after a hard day’s caching. Cachers will be able to gossip about their geocaching exploits, exchange geocaching ideas, plan the next SGDO and swap TBs.
However, to satisfy the thirst for caching, there are a variety of options before the meet at the hotel. The inspiration and main cache walk for the event is Snaik’s cache – Jocks Road - in the Angus Glens. Full information about the walk, as well as reminders about sensible precautions to take when hillwalking, are on the cache page.
Here are some of the options :
Option 1 – the main route
Meet at Glen Doll N56 52.274 W003 10.637.
There will be a set off time of 9.00am, if you wish to walk as part of a group, however you are not compelled to start at this time. If you want to set off later and walk faster, or set off early and walk more slowly, then do so. The round trip to the cache is 12 miles.
Option 2 – going the whole hog
Walk the whole length of Jock’s Road (14 miles), stopping off to do the cache en route. To do this, you will need to arrange for someone else to park at the other end of the route at Auchallater and walk to the cache from the opposite direction, so that you can get a lift back to the Glen Clova Hotel. Snaik has already kindly offered to walk in from Auchallater, meet cachers at the cache and escort a few people wishing to do the whole walk back to his car and thence onto the hotel. Book a space in his car early, if you want to do this option!
Option 3 – the easy option
Explore the area and do as many or as few caches as you want before meeting at the hotel at 4pm.
Option 4 – for cyclists
Park at Auchallater N56 58.630 W003 23.415 and walk in and out (15 miles total), then head round to the event cache at Glen Clova, or alternatively cycle to end of Loch Callater N56 56.078 W003 20.169 and walk the rest of the way to the cache (8 miles cycling 7 miles walking) before attending the event.
Option 5 –for diehard Munro baggers
After bagging the cache on Tolmount, there are 3 other Munros nearby, Tom Buidhe (957), Mayar (928) and Driesh (947) in that order coming off Driesh via the Shank of Drumfollow, making a circular walk (16 miles).
Needless to say, all attempting the walks should be well equipped and clothed. Look forward to seeing you there!
