Short walk from parking...

In 1856 miners looking for gold in the Blair Valley in what is now the Southern section of Anza Borrego State Park came across a skull and bones.

Controversy surrounded the interpretation of these fossils. Anatomists examined the first discovery and concluded that it was possibly a Homo sapien. They also theorized that his flattened head was due to powerful blows, perhaps caused by smacks to the head in frustration while out 'seeking' but not finding...

More evidence from various digs have shown that Neanderthals wielded simple tools, had certain rites and hid trinkets in obscure places.

Could these primitive beings have been the first geocachers? Some say that if you look in the right places, evidence of these beings still exists...
