Geocache Description:

A traditional cache buried in volcanic rocks at the far end of an amazing beach. The beach is two miles walk or drive out of the village of Sigri and in the middle of a world heritage park. The whole of this area is volcanic and the second largest petrified forest in the world!

A traditional small tupperware type cache buried in volcanic rocks at the far end of an amazing beach. The beach is two miles walk or drive out of the village of Sigri and in the middle of a world heritage park. The whole of this area is volcanic and the second largest petrified forest in the world!

Sigri is an small village on the western end of the Island of Lesvos (or Lesbos), and is often described as 'where the road ends'. Over the past few years it has seen a large increase in daytime visitors due to the state-of-the-art Museum dedicated to the petrified forest. There are incredible examples of petrified trees and fragents of petrified wood can be found everywhere. The snorkelling here is particularly good and beautiful examples of water-worn wood can be found on the beaches.

To find the cache you need to walk or drive through the village and out past the town beach on the mountain road towards Eressos. (A google search on Sappho and eressos should be revealing, particularly when linked with the island's name!)

Once you have walked around 1 mile out, you will see a beach that looks like it should belong in the carribean - pure white sand. Head down onto this beach and then strike out south again, past pools of terrapins to the next long beach. This is the beach of Limena and the cache is at the very far end.Important note: All the beaches in this area are stunning, and, with the exception of the town beach, very isolated. As a result, swimming costumes are the exception rather than the norm and please do not be surprised or offended if someone sporting an 'all over tan' happens to walk past!!

Small note on cache maintenance: Whilst this cache is a long way from our home, we visit Sigri on a regular basis so are able to maintain the cache.
