Geocache Description:

This is a lovely walk along a section of the old coaching road which runs near the current A4. The path is a bit tricky in places - mostly OK for a buggy but the bits that aren't are likely to make you wish you'd left it at home!

The inspiration for this cache is the infamous Cherhill Gang who roamed along this stretch of the coaching road from Bath to London. The gang operated in the 18th Century and are notable not least because of their modus operandi: They would stand and rob you wearing nothing but their boots, a mask and a big smile! The car park is at 51 25.338N 01 53.515W. It's a well known spot for dog walkers and gets very busy on a Sunday afternoon. The turning is off the A4 on the Calne side, on the left if you're travelling that way or the right if headed towards Marlborough. It's less than 1/2 mile from the Beckhampton roundabout, almost at the top of the hill. Just look for the big clump of trees. When you get out and start walking, if you walk through the trees and keep going along that line you'll be on the old road, whereas it's quite possible to walk to the left of the road, just below the crest and not realise that it's there! If you keep on going along the road, past the cache you'll end up with a good view towards Calne and way beyond it. This is an easy cache which I've put here because it's a super walk - especially if you have a dog. The cache used to be a green Persil washing powder tablets container which went AWOL and is now a brown painted, sort of camouflaged lock'n'lock container
