In the late 1800's many small towns sprang up in the north woods to harvest the lumber. Unfortunately, not much conservation was practiced and in a few short years the lumber was gone. Shortly after, so were most of the small towns, with just the names remaining as crossroads and general locations.
The lost town of Ayr is one such town. In 1895 Ayr had a post office, church, cemetery, saw mill, school, and a population of 60 people. When the lumber was gone, so was much of the town. All that remains today, is a general location on the map, a church, an old school house, and the second cemetery. The original cemetery is reported to still be visible but is on private property. The cache site is at the newer cemetery- "Ayr Church Cemetery". While searching for the cache check out the old head stones. The earliest one noticed is dated 1884.While placing the cache my GPSr was bouncing around like solar flares with accuracy ranging from 10 feet to 80 feet! The cache should be pretty easy to find despite the error rate and its well hidden-ness!
***4/3/05*** maintenace check today. Cache container has been replaced with a standard ammo box, log book replaced, and restocked.
