The Gravel Pit Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Citanes26: Well, it's come to this. The cache has seen very little traffic in the last few years, it's well known to local muggles (who've signed the book from time to time), and now the long abandoned quarry has a shiny new "Keep Out" sign at the gate.

Thanks to all who stopped by over the years.

Geocache Description:

A brisk hike to the top of an abandoned gravel pit. The high terrain rating is based on steep elevation changes, but other than a good set of lungs you don't need any special gear.

There's room enough to park a vehicle at the entrance of the pit (off Glen Road in MacLellan's Brook) There are several ways (of varying difficulty levels) of getting to the cache site, but you DO NOT need to climb the cliffs, nor would we recommend it. If you're getting your hands involved getting up to the cache, you're trying too hard and putting yourself in unnecessary danger.

The best route to the cache starts with that very obvious trail to your left as soon as you enter the pit proper. Climb to the second plateau (the trail to it is also obvious), and then cross over to the other side. After a rather steep jaunt uphill through some small trees (no bushwhacking), you'll be upon the cache site in no time. You'll have to push a few branches out of the way near the cache.

The cache is a small, flat, transparent container. It's on the ground in a stand of young evergreen trees. Due to its small size, and the very infrequent traffic around this cache, it is NOT ideal for trackables (travel bugs, geocoins, etc.) Please, there are many high-traffic caches in New Glasgow that see far more cachers than this one, put your bugs there - their owners will thank you! To travel bug owners, we'll try to grab any bug that lands here ASAP and send it on it's way via a nearby higher traffic cache.

Although this cache is there all year round, finding it in winter will be next to impossible.

Once found, please stash it back exactly where you found it (we've had no end of problems with this in the past), with the lid tightly sealed, and right side up.

By the way... It's only 155m above sea level, but the view from the top of the pit (about 30-40m from the cache) offers a view of all five towns of Pictou County, binoculars are a must! The view at night is just as impressive, but if you try this one at night, please take care around the edges of the plateaus... each one is a 20m drop straight down.

Finally, this cache is well known to a few muggle kids/teens in the area, but they only seem to enjoy signing the logbook from time to time.
