Geocache Description:

The Mt. Woodson Trail System has some of the best hikes in the county. The cache is located on the Fry-Koegle trail. The trail head is at Archie Moore Rd. and Mt. Woodson Way near Highway 67 (N33 00.785, W116 57.198). The cache can also be accessed from Lake Poway via the Mount Woodson trail. Regardless of how you get there, it is a long, strenuous hike. Take plenty of water. The cache container is a green ammo box loaded with the usual geoswag.

Now, that’s all you need to find the cache. The rest of this page explains the cache title. It’s a fairly sad story so just skip it if you want to.

This cache is dedicated to my wife Colette who passed away March 25, 2004. She was 52. Colette died of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a neuromuscular disease that causes the motor neurons to die, causing the victim to slowly weaken until completely paralyzed. Over the four years she battled ALS, Colette lost her ability to run, dance, hike, stand up from a sitting position, work, drive, climb stairs, write, type, walk, feed herself, wash herself, stand, shake hands, travel, hug, roll over in bed, dial a phone, sit up, eat, swallow, and, finally, breath.

Colette spent her last four months sitting in a chair in a nursing home in Rancho Bernardo. The view out her window was the north-west side of Mt. Woodson. She became quite familiar and fond of Mt. Woodson, particularly during “the golden hour” when it glowed with the setting sun. I told her that someday I would climb up there with a mirror, call her on the cell phone, and then reflect the sunlight her direction to see if she could see it. We never got to do that – along with a great many other things.

You can see Colette’s nursing home from the cache location. So, when you are up there, face west, wave your arms high above your head and yell “Hi, Colette.” I’m sure she will hear you.
