Friedhof der Namenlosen Reloaded Traditional Geocache
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
This Traditional Cache is located near the "Alberner Hafen" in the east of Vienna. The cemetery is of main historical interest.
The "Cemetery for the Unknown" is the one and only cemetery of the world (!), where only the dead of a river (Danube) were buried. Causes of death were drowning, suicide and crime. In former times the washed up dead were buried here in this cemetery. There are no funerals any more. Today the area is a memorial place. Please keep that in mind and act in decency! Maybe you want to light a candle for the unfortunates.
Every first sunday after All Hallows at 2 pm the fishermen commemorate the drowned: They build a float, adorn it with flowers and row it into the river danube.
More details about the area can be found at:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedhof_der_Namenlosen (in german).
You can reach the cache area by public transport (Bus 76A from U3 "Enkplatz", leave Bus at "Alberner Hafen"). Those coming by car can use the highway exit "Simmeringer Haide". Finally follow the signs to "Hafen Albern" and park at the given coordinates. The inn has been demolished and is never there!
Have a look at the cemetery. You can find an epitaph for a person who was drowned by somebody or a person who had a bike accident.
Cache: The cache is a white film canister with a grey cap.
Happy caching, PlanetEarth
