That's Magic- Smile or Scowl Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pieman: I am afraid that the notice board at stage 2 has been removed along with the coordinates. It's amazing that the coordinates for stage 1 are still visible after over 14 years in place when they are just printed on paper and covered with plastic film. Anyway, time to go I think.

Geocache Description:

I hope that this cache will make you smile, but it might do the opposite!

On 25.4.05 I added an extra non-encrypted hint and expanded the encrypted hint for the last stage.

The cache involves a walk along the footpaths of the Arley Estate, although the final cache is just outside it. Some of the paths can be quite muddy after heavy rain.

I suggest you park on the Eastern Edge of the Estate at the Cann Lane car park, situated at N053 19.289 W002 27.854. Having recently bought Memory Map, I realise that I have underestimated the distance slightly- the total walking distance car to car to do the three parts of the cache is 2.6 miles.

The cache’s co-ordinates are for the first part of the cache, which is situated in the lovely out of the way hamlet of Arley Green. The hamlet has just a few well-kept houses beside a nice lake and is not accessible by car except for residents. Look out for the beautiful tall chimneys on the houses.

For Stage 1 of the cache you are looking for a single digit positive number that will enable you to find the second part of the cache. I know some cachers like to miss out stages of multicaches by working out likely sites using maps and mapping software. If you do this here, you will miss what I have written at Stage 1.

The answer I have posted at Stage 1 is PRINTED ON PAPER and uncovered 5 ft from the ground at the cache co-ordinates- it is not the metallic number at the same co-ordinates. When you have the number (A), perform the simple mathematical manipulations below and then plug the answer into the equations to get the co-ordinates for Stage 2.

(i) Multiply (A) by 9

(ii) Reduce the answer from (i) to a one digit number (assuming this is necessary- you’ll have to find (A) to be sure!) by adding the two digits in the answer together (iii) Take 4 from the answer to (ii), which gives you (B).

The co-ordinates for Stage 2 are: N053 19 CDE W002 27 FGH

Numbers (C) to (H) are derived from the formulas below. For any negative answers, ignore the negative sign and use it as a positive number. To add further confusion, the numbers (A) to (H) may or may not be all different- you’ll have to find out for yourselves.

C = B - 3

D = B + 3

E = B + 4

F = B + 3

G = 2B – 5

H = 2B – 6

The co-ordinates for the Final Stage of the cache are in view and uncovered at Stage 2. I've rechecked the co-ordinates several times and have amended them so they now should be pretty accurate.

Finally, some non-encrypted hints:

-You might have to think laterally at the final stage, but then again you might not…
-Only the encrypted hint for Stage 1 is cryptic
-At no stage do you need to break anything or use any tools!
-Everything I have said in the cache description and hints is true
-There are only 3 things to find to complete this cache- this includes the cache itself
-There are aspects of magic about the cache!

Please do not reveal any of the quirks of this cache in your logs, so you don’t spoil it for others. For anybody who records a DNF I am happy to supply more clues.
