A 2 mile loop hike into a gorgeous cirque basin.
This place is special. Park at the trailhead for Echo Basin, located on FS 055, 2 miles north of highway 20, near Santiam pass.
Hike uphill 1/2 mile through a young tree plantation until you reach a fork in the trail at a footbridge. Stay left. You will travel through a forest of hemlock, firs, and Alaska yellow cedar-which is not common in Oregon.
When you reach the basin area, hike uphill from the boardwalk near a gigantic Doug fir to find the cache-an ammo box. Watch out for boomer holes in the meadow!
While you are enjoying the scenery of this huge natural amphitheatre, be sure to shout out your favorite words and hear them echo back to you. Continue on the loop for your return to find the biggest specimens of the Alaska yellow cedars (Chamecypris nootkatensis), estimated to be 1500 years old.
When we placed the cache, there were just a few patches of snow, and Odder hiked it in her sandals. There is a local mythical man/legend who is afraid of this place.......
