[Clark] September 1st Sunday 1805 “a fine
morning. Set out early and proceeded on over high ruged hills
passing the heads of the Small runs which fall into the river on
our left to a large Creek which falls into the river 6 miles to our
left and encamped in the bottom.”
The next day (Sept 2)
they were going to make a very bad decision. We do not know exactly
why, but they left the longer, established Indian trail (35 miles)
for a shorter way (18 miles) with no trail through some of the
roughest terrain on the trip. The established trail follows up
Dahlonega Creek (at Gibbonsville) but they followed the North Fork
of the Salmon River which they named Fish Creek.
This
cache is an ammo can. Be sure to sign the logbook. There are also
some trade items. Trade items are most desirable if they have
something (even remotely) to do with The Corp of Discovery or
native Indians of the area. Also in the cache are copies of the
journals for Sept 1st 1805. You are encouraged to sit there and
read them – and take a copy home with you if you
desire.
I
have put a cache at each of the Corp of Discovery campsites in the
Bitterroot Vally - er I mean Valley! There are seven campsites in
our valley. I have also put a cache at Lost Trail Pass to represent
that campsite for Sept 3rd. and also put caches here (Sept 1st) and
for Sept 2nd 1805. This makes ten Lewis and Clark Campsite caches
that I have placed.
WINTER NOTE: This cache would only be a little harder to find in
the winter.
