Geocache Description:

While in the area doing His and Her Caches down the road I decided to drive up the road further and check out the logging area. Great views up and down the Sky Valley and across to Mt. Persis and Mt. Index. Easy walk of about 2 miles R/T. Check out the huge rocks and how this cache got it's name.

You'll be on a logging road unless you decide to take a shortcut cross country that will shorten your walk by about 1/4 mile. This is a recently logged off area on steep slopes north of US 2 between Goldbar and Index. Access via Reiter Rd. about 1 mile east of Goldbar on US 2. Go past the Reiter Pit area and turn left at N 47 50.753 W 121 37.610 Continue on this sometimes bumpy road to a right at N 47 50.981 W 121 37.817 Follow this decent road east to the red gate and park here. Two other caches. His Cache and Her Cache are nearby. I parked here as recent waterbars made it difficult to go further. If you have a SUV or high clearance vehicle then this can be a drive by cache. I don't see any recent logging activity, but this could change at any time or the gate could be locked. If you walk the road it switch backs up to better and better views. My daughters started to complain, so I found a spot for a cache at 1140 ft, elevation. It's at a spot that affords an impressive view east, south and west and should be accessible most of the winter. There are some nice waterfalls along the road to enjoy. I bet this would be an excellent spot to watch a sunset. Enjoy the view and be careful if you have kids.

Update 11/22/2010 DNR has closed Reiter Foothills to motorized access and will be turning this into an ORV park. From what I've seen of the preliminary plans there won't be motorized access any where near this cache. Hiking is still allowed, so I'll update the terrain rating. Plan on about a 5 mile r/t hike. The road for most of the way was recently repaired and is in good shape as of this summer.
