Geocache Description:

Parking for this cache is at N48 46.604 W122 267.846. Park near the Model Boating Hours sign. This is about a half of a mile round trip hike on flat terrain. This can be very muddy, so leave your high heels at home. This is a City of Bellingham off leash dog park.

The cache is in an ammo box.

From I-5 in Bellingham, take Exit 255 and turn east on Sunset Drive. In 0.2 miles turn left on Orleans Street, which curves left onto Woodstock Way. Turn right on James Street, and the parking lot is on the right.

From its ignoble beginnings as a pit left after dirt and gravel were dug out to construct nearby Interstate 5, and despite its early name of Kmart Pond due to its proximity to a shopping mall, this small lake has become a lovely little spot. Squalicum Creek flows through the park, and wetlands (inaccessible to the public) provide a haven for wildlife on the eastern edge of the pond. This is one of the off-leash dog areas in Bellingham, where all trails plus the water are designated as water exercise and training areas, much to the obvious delight of dogs. On a recent visit, most dogs and their owners appeared to frequent the shore along the north side of the lake.

Follow the trail along the north side of the lake until you get to the cache location. When the wide trail ends on the north side of the lake, take the smaller trail to the left (not the one where you can fall in the water).

When you get near the cache you will notice a small water inlet on the south side of the trail. The geocache is located on the north side of there trail near there.

The cache is not located near the endge of the water, so there is no need to fall into the pond.
