Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache You will be able to drive within about .1 of a Mile of the cache. You will have to walk in the rest of the way.

This is a beautiful area of Kansas, just past the western edge of the flint hills. South of here is an area that is rich in oil and gas production. North of here you will find many native stone houses, schools and churches. West of here the country levels out and is rich agricultural property.

The lake was built as a water reservoir for the city of Herington. Annually the lake is host to hot rod drag boat races. Normally the recreation here is fishing. Herington Reservoir is an excellent lake for walleye, bass and crappie fishing. You will find many other species being sought here as well.

Herington was established in 1887 and grew as a railroad town. It was the first major railroad stop west of historic Council Grove. In fact, the name comes from Mr. Monroe Herington, an early railroad promoter that obtained a vast area of Kansas, over 100,000 acres. He gave right of way land to the Topeka, Salina and Western Railroad and even donated money for the depot. In 1885 the railroad became the Missouri Pacific.

East of Herington lies the Herington Municipal Airport. At one time, during WWII it was the Herington Army Airfield. After being abandoned by the army, commercial gunpowder maunfacturing moved into the facility. A plant explosion killed several employees. Pyrodex, a substitute for black powder is still manufactured there by the Alliant Powder Company, formally Hercules Powder.

You will find the area loaded with wildlife of all varieties and the area residents are great people.

Other area attractions include the Diamond Springs and the Lost Springs, both important stops on the Santa Fe Trail. North of here is the Rock Springs Ranch 4H Center. Be sure to visit the spring and water wheel.
