Underwater tunnels, history, a picnic in the country.....interested?

It took 4 years and R100,000 for Andrew Geddes Bain to forge a pass through the Limietberg range. The Bainskloof pass was opened on the 14 September 1853. The pass is a national monument and has an interesting history.
The start of your adventure is at The Tweede Tol camping/picnic area. You'll find the camp site on the Bainskloof pass road (R303) near the start coordinates. This was the site of the Breede River Convict Station where the convicts which built the pass were housed. Today it forms part of the Limietberg nature reserve and there are camping and picnic facilities. There is an entrance fee payable. If camping, book well in advance in peak season, and if going through for a day picnic go early as space is limited. The cache may look temptingly close to the road. However accessing it from the road is not only dangerous (almost vertical) but you will also be trespassing on Cape Nature Conservation land and will be prosecuted.
Check the weather, these mountains are treacherous. Winters are cold and wet, snow and flash floods are common, summers can be unforgivingly hot. If you are going in summer be sure to take your sunblock and swimming costume. For the more adventurous, take a pair of swimming goggles to explore the underwater tunnels in the crystal clear water. The best way to enjoy this cache is to take a picnic and spend the day there. There are braai facilities but take your own grill. Firewood, and only firewood can be purchased there. There's nothing else to buy, so everything else you need to take with you.
| Suggested equipment: |
Swimming costume
Goggles (for the tunnels)
Ziploc bags to keep the GPSr dry
Rubberised shoes, not necessary but may help
Either a floating device to drag behind you or some way of carrying the GPSr and goodies that will free up your hands.

In placing the cache, myself and guest artist Renate swam/crawled upriver. This is quite fun, and possibly the easiest way to get there. If you are averse to the swim, the left bank (facing upstream) may afford you dry access to the cache. If you are going for the swim route, try and free up your hands so that you can freely swim through the pools and pull yourself along the boulders in the shallower sections. A note of caution here, try limit walking as the rocks are slippery. Amazingly the black vegetation growing on the rocks are friendly and non slippery, i.e. beacons of hope as you clamber your way upstream.

The cache is in a 2.5l container wrapped in black plastic bags. It is on the right bank (facing upstream) of the river. Be sure to secure the cache with rocks again.
