Geocache Description:

This cache will guide you to a former place of refuge in times of war, which was discovered and descripted in the year 1966 by Rudolf Flucher.
Hiking shoes and long trousers are recommended!
Do not approach the direct way from the starting point to the cache, obey the description! Time needed: approx. 1.5 hours.
In addition to the description please use the photos of some waypoints for your information.

In past ages people used fire signs to warn each other from threats such as approaching enemies. These fires were called “Kreid- Fires” (“Kreid” is an old German word and means crying) and were located at exposed places so that they could be seen over great distances from mountain to mountain or from castle to castle.

One of this fire places in Styria was at the nearby Frauenkogel (see Gert’s cache “Graz West: Frauenkogel”; it is located close to the former fire place, that has been at the place of the ruins of the “Goldhannwarte”).
In case of threats the civilian population had the possibility to rescue them to isolated areas (such as this one) in woods or valleys to save their lives.
You are going to see some traces there that still can be seen although hundreds of years have gone by (see photo “The Area”).

The trip starts at the beginning of the "Fuchsloch" (see photo: “Start”, the forestry road starts behind the green gate):
E 15° 22.284
N 47° 05.274
You can come here with your car, take the bus or approach by bicycle.

Follow the forestry road starting here for some hundred meters, the road will bend to the right, soon afterwards you will see a yellow-white marked stick on the left.
Some meters further a path starts to the right (see photo “Waypoint”). The GPS reception is weak there, so I can’t tell you the exact coordinates.

Follow that path (watch out- it cannot always be seen clearly), beware of thorns on your way, until you reach a large overgrown hollow at:
E 15° 22.146
N 47° 05.476
This hollow has been the waterhole for the people hiding in the area.

Move ahead, the earth wall guiding the path to the left was part of the protection-wall of the area. You will soon reach a crossing with another path (see photo “Gate”) at
E 15° 22.144
N 47° 05.556
A gate to the refuge area was located somewhere here.

Turn to the left, follow the path a few meters until you reach
E 15° 22.138
N 47° 05.570
Now enter the wood to the right somewhere here (there is no path!), move in an angle of approximately 90 degrees up, you will cross another earth wall, which has also been part of the protection (marked in the photo “Wall ”).

Follow the right side of this earth wall until you reach the northernmost part of the area at:
E 15° 22.208
N 47° 05.592
Turn to the right and you can see the ridge (see photo “Ridge”) that connects the northernmost with the southernmost part of the area, the steep slope on the other side is a natural barrier.

Go along that ridge until you reach the summit of the “Frauenberg” at:
E 15° 22.252
N 47° 05.533

You are very close to the cache now (see photo “Cache Area”), it is located some meters further, under a big rock, on the left side of the path at:
E 15° 22.258
N 47° 05.501

Obey the back of the logbook, there is a detailed map of the area enclosed!
Enjoy the view!

The cache originally contained:
Logbook (please do not remove)
Pencil for your log (please do not remove)
Ink Pad and Stamp Set
Candle
Mini Text marker
Small Picture-frame
Christmas-Göönk

It is better to use the same way back, otherwise you could easily get messed up with thorns…

Have fun!
