This is a multi-use trail system being used by off road motorcyclists, bicyclist, hikers, and an occasional horseback rider. The only trails open to ATVs in the Canfield system are trail 1562 which comes up from Nettleton Gultch Rd. to the Hayden Lake Viewpoint then follows the ridge to the Fernan Saddle and 2342 which goes to the towers from 1562. The difficulty rating changes depending on the mode of transportation you use.
If you're not familiar with this trail system you can pick up a trail map at the Forest Service office I-90 exit 15 just a few blocks north of the interstate. There are a couple different trail heads I use the one across from the shooting range. Follow the Fernan Lake Rd., which is just past the Forest Service office, about 5 miles, and on the West side of the road is the parking lot with the trail heading out of it.
This trail will get you to the top of Canfield Butte. Often people don't use it, opting to use the old road instead, I prefer using the trail it's much more fun.
You'll find this cache by using trail D. The cache is in a 6 cup Rubbermaid container with a blue lid. Original contents include an off road motorcycle, a couple of ladybug compasses, a Christmas towel, a Christmas ornament, a few other little odds and ends plus a log book and mechanical pencil.
Enjoy your visit to the Canfield trails!!
