Helidocs Railroad History Series #4
In the 1870s – 2 rail lines were built in northern Boone county. The first ran north to south passing through Beloit, Roscoe, Caledonia, (present day Candlewick lake) and on to Belvedere. The second ran west to east passing through Rockford, Harlem ( Rock Cut park & Pierce Lake), Argyle, Caledonia, Poplar Grove on to Harvard. Rock Cut state park takes its name from the rock cut area. The railroad literally had to cut through several hundred feet of rock along the creekbed.
These two lines intersected about ½ mile east of the present village of Caledonia. Please refer to attached map/photo. In the 1920s, the Caled. – Belvedere line was abandoned. In the 30s –the Caled. –Rockford line was abandoned . The Chicago-Northwestern used the remaining Roscoe-Harvard route until abandoned in the 1990s. This is the present Long Prairie- Stone Bridge Trail.
The cache is a 1 qt camo taped, screw top jar – it is located at the crossing of these two long abandoned lines.
