In honor of Big Eagle's 1000 finds
If you were looking for anonymity, you came to the wrong place. While we are sure he would rather stay hidden in the shadows behind the scenes, our intentions are to let you know a little more about this guy. We'll start with geocaching, nobody we know has been doing it longer than this guy. 2-14-2001 The oldest cache we have found was hidden by this guy "Henry's Cache" GC672. The name on the cache page says Lazy Loppers are the hiders, but this was Burt's alias before he settled on Big Eagle. Henry's is out there, way out there. Maybe that is why only 20 people have found this in the last 2 1/2 years. But way out there doesn't bother this guy. As a matter of fact, that's usually where you will find him. Way out there making the trails we hike on passable, usable and beautiful. We have personally been on a few four star terrain hikes with him. Most of us are left in awe of his capabilities. He has more energy and stamina than most people half his age. He spends most of his off time volunteering. Not only doing trail maintenance, but also leading hikes through the Santa Monica mountains. If you ever have a chance to hike with him, do so. He has plenty to teach. We also get a kick out of his logs. He says alot with just a few words and always seems to combine a little wry wit with the occasional dash of sarcasm. Guaranteed to produce a grin. Burt also does something else that pushes him to that super human level. Every year on his birthday, he subtracts his age from 100, and runs that many miles. Burts last birthday found him running 29 miles. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be around him are continually inspired by not only what he has done, but what he continues to do. So in the infamous words of slegal, Burt, do not ask if you are worthy of this cache, but is this cache worthy of you? Thanks for everything, we are looking forward to many more adventures. Fondly, The Conejo Cachers
Now on to the cache. It is game
trails at best the whole way. We did what we could to make them noticable. We
trimmed brush back at certain pass throughs so you know you are going the right way.
So look for evidence of cut back brush. After you pick up "The Log" cache continue
towards "The Perch". You will pass by what looks like some deer bones, continue on
that path until you see some stones we placed in the path to direct you to go up
hill. After you find the perch, your gps will be telling you to go left, what you
need to do is go right(east) work your way up, (it is very easy to lose the trails
here) until you get to the plateau on the east side. From there you start heading
towards the final two caches. Look for some bones placed chest high in a bush to
know you are on the right path. If you don't find them, don't worry, all these game
trails eventually go to the same place if you are walking towards the cache. The
trail
gets easier to identify from this point. You will have to do some stooping, some
squeezing and a little rock hopping to get to your destination. Keep looking for
evidence of trimmed branches to help you on your way. When you reach "Zippy the Pinhead" you are close, as the crow flies, or maybe the eagle in this case, the rest of the way should be evident. Continue on to "Where Eagles Fly".
I feel pretty good about my coords so it should take you right to it. You are
looking for a rock with a bush behind it. Under that bush we have concealed the
prize like this. If you look carefully you might see a brown piece of wood under
the brush. The brush on top of this was placed there and is easily removed. Once
you can fully see the wood, lift the lid using the carraige bolt as a handle. Do
not try to remove the wood. Under the lid is the ammo box. Re-hide as found when you are done. Enjoy the views, they
are spectacular!
