Geocache Description:

Eco-Awareness cache at Lost Lake, Camillus NY.

What happened to the park?!?

Welcome to Edgecliff Park, or what's left of it anyway. Many Moons ago (before the End-Times came) members of our humble little family would often-times leave Stately McCool Manor and hike down the old Marcellus/Syracuse Trolley trail that ran from Split Rock to Lost Lake, the small body of water that's the center of Edgecliff Park and the westernmost point of the Split Rock Unique Area.

Folks would come out here to go fishing or small game hunting, families would have picnics on the little "cliffs" on Lost Lake's western edge, and it wasn't uncommon for kids to go skinny dipping if the day was hot enough.

The Tripoli Landfill pretty much destroyed all of it, unfortunately. Unregulated dumping in the 70's and 80's killed most of the critters and plants living in the small pond and surrounding area, and now much of it looks like a weird moon-scape or a bad set from an End-of-the-World type movie. The Landfill was finally shut down and capped off, but as you can see the surrounding ecosystem isn't exactly springing back to life.

Although there are many trails in the surrounding area leading to Lost Lake, the majority of them cut through private farmland therefore they are off-limits! Park your vehicle at the main public entrance to Split Rock, N 43'01.487 W 76' 14.558. From here there are many well-maintained trails that will eventually lead you to our cache, no bushwacking necessary. Be prepared for a long but scenic hike with several changes in terrain and ecosystems. Most of all, have fun!
